One of the questions we get asked the most is what is it like owning a Chinese Crested dog? Now, we are biased, but the first thing we have to say is - owning one is fabulous. They are the most loving, funny, quirky breed that you could ever hope to have in your family.
What Are Their Personalities?
If there is one thing that can be said about Chinese Crested Dogs, it’s that they love their people. Affectionately known as ‘velcro’ dogs, they love nothing more than snuggling up with their person on the sofa of an evening… or afternoon, or morning. This love is like no other, and one of the best things about a Chinese Crested. However, it can be worth noting that for some dogs, this can make them suffer separation anxiety if they are left alone.
I’ve Heard They Can Be Tricky. Is that True?
Each dog has their own personality, so you can’t base everything on the breed. However, as above, their personalities can be quite needy – so if you enjoy personal space, this can be something that some people, not used to the breed struggle with.
Are They Confident?
Each dog is different, especially when you consider that their history before coming into rescue will be mixed. That said, they are fast learners and often food motivated, so teaching confidence in social situations can be really easy, although of course this is always at the dog's own pace.
How Do I Look After Their Skin?
There are two types of Chinese Crested – Hairless & Powderpuff, and as you can imagine, they both need very different routines when it comes to grooming.
Powderpuff – They can have really long, fast-growing hair, so they need regular grooming – you can learn to do this yourself, but we would recommend a regular professional groomer visit where possible. Their hair can grow fast on their face and over their eyes, which of course needs trimming regularly. In hot weather, you’ll want to keep their coat short so that they remain comfortable. Muddy winter walks will also probably mean more regular baths!
Hairless – Many people assume that a hairless dog requires a large range of creams to take care of their skin. However, this is often the opposite – and actually the less you put on their skin, the better. They can be prone to blackheads, so keeping an eye on this is essential. In hot weather, many people can be tempted to smother their dog in suncream (always use a pet-safe one!), but using a sun suit and keeping them out of the sun in the hottest parts of the day is essential. They can tolerate temperatures well, but you should be wary of sunburn and protect their skin.
Can They Live with Other Pets?
Yes, Chinese Cresteds can be friendly, social and enjoy company. However, we treat each rescue individually and, based on their foster home assessment, may or may not be suitable to live with other pets. They do have a way of knowing ‘their own’ and often Chinese Cresteds that don’t get on with all dogs love the company of other Chinese Crested Dogs
